Consonant blends games and words
A blend is two or three consonants said close together, where you still hear each one: fr in frog, cl in clock, st in nest.
Blends at the start
20 words, like frog, crab, flag, sled, drum, plug ...

Double letters: ss, ll, ck
Short words often end in a double letter or ck: bell, doll, kiss, pill, duck, sock, rock, lock, pack.
How to practice
- Say the blend before the word: "cl, cl, clock".
- Stretch the word and listen for both consonants.
- Spell the word, then change one letter: clap, clip.

What is a consonant blend?
Two or three consonants side by side where you still hear each one, like fr in frog or st in nest. A digraph is different: its two letters make one new sound, like sh.
When do children learn blends?
Usually after short vowel CVC words, often in kindergarten and first grade. In the game they are the age 4 deck.
