Free phonics games

Phonics is matching sounds to letters. Each step below is one calm round of picture spelling in Spell the Picture, in the order most schools teach.

Step by step

1. Short vowels (CVC words)

cat, bed, pig, dog, sun: one sound per letter.

2. Consonant blends

frog, clock, nest, lamp: two consonants, both heard.

3. Digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh

ship, chick, tooth, whale: two letters, one sound.

4. Long vowels

cake, kite, tree, boat: the vowel says its name.

5. Bossy r

star, corn, bird, turtle: the r changes the vowel.

Letter names or letter sounds

The voice says letter names by default (bee, see). In the game's grown-up settings you can switch it to letter sounds (buh, kuh), which many phonics programs prefer.

Questions parents ask

What order should phonics be taught in?

A common order is short vowels in CVC words first, then blends, then digraphs like sh and ch, then long vowels, then r-controlled vowels and longer words. Schools vary a little, but the steps below follow that order.

Are these phonics games free?
