Long vowel games
A long vowel says its own name: the a in cake, the i in kite, the o in boat. Children learn them through the silent e and through vowel teams.
In the game
- a_e (8): cake, snake, grapes, skate, plane, wave ...
- i_e (11): kite, bike, dice, rice, slide, five ...
- o_e, u_e (12): rose, cone, bone, nose, globe, home ...
- ee, ea (11): tree, feet, seal, leaf, beach, tea ...
- ai, oa, ow (13): rain, snail, train, mail, paint, boat ...
- oo (7): moon, spoon, broom, boot, food, school ...
How to practice
- Compare pairs: cap and cape, kit and kite, hop and hope.
- Ask what the e at the end does. It makes the vowel say its name.
- For vowel teams, say "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking" and look for words where it works (rain, boat).
Questions parents ask
What is a long vowel?
A vowel that says its own name, like the a in cake, the i in kite or the o in boat.
What is magic e?
An e at the end of a word that you do not hear but that makes the vowel before it long: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite. Teachers also call it silent e.
What are vowel teams?
Two letters that work together to make one vowel sound, like ee in tree, ai in rain and oa in boat.
