How a round goes

A round is 5 words. Each letter is said as it lands in the tray, then the whole word, then a line of praise that names what your child did ("You spelled cat!"). A wrong letter is said out loud and settles back: no buzzer, no losing and no timer. After 5 words the game stops on "All done" with a line for you to talk about together.

Pick how hard: Easy gives the letters in order and shows faint letters in the tray. Mix mixes the letters up. Tricky hides the word and adds two extra letters, so your child sounds it out from the picture.

Questions parents ask

How many words are there?

Spell the Picture has 479 cards in 5 decks, one for each age from 3 to 7 and 8. Most have a picture; sight words are heard instead.

Does my child need to type?

No. Your child taps a letter tile or drags it into the tray. On a computer, typing the letter works too.

Does my child need to read?

No. Each card shows a picture and the voice says the word and every letter, so a child can spell by listening and matching. Sight words have no picture: the child taps the ear to hear the word.
